I've checked the memories/Googled already.. My mother plans to visit me for the day on Wednesday, but I live on Summit Ave in Brighton (on the Comm Ave side) and we're worried about parking. Are there any garages or public lots around there? I couldn't find any when I googled. She doesn't mind paying for parking. I was also wondering if she'd get towed/ticketed if she parked in the Whole Foods parking lot for the day, but I'm sure they're pretty vigilant about it. I'm basically ruling out any street parking because I don't think I've seen a single open space in the last 2 months. Thanks in advance!

Need (would like) toaster oven recommendations [Nov. 8th, 2009|06:34 pm]

[byrthebb]
I am requesting a toaster oven from my son for my birthday but I want one which will last a while. I also don't want him to spend too much money on it.
So I need some recommendations from any of you who have toaster ovens on the best one to get that hopefully doesn't cost over $50.
I've looked online for a few but well I am still not sure.
I think I want a large one but I guess I will settle for a smaller one.
I really wouldn't use it for toast but more for cooking things like breaded shrimp or pizza. Mostly cooking frozen stuff or reheating leftovers. But it might be nice to broil a small steak or something now and then.
Thanks for your recommendations. Oh - I would also like to know what store you bought yours from. Thanks- BB

New to living, help... [Nov. 8th, 2009|04:22 pm]

[punbeing]
[mood | distressed]

Okay, so, first of all I live in BC, Canada. I'm not really sure how to go about this, but I don't know what to do right now and I'm really worried about how the next month is going to go.

I turned 18 in February, applied for college, got accepted, and moved away to be on my own during the summer. I applied for student loans and I was approved for $7000 this semester. I thought this was pretty cool, and most likely enough to live on after I paid my tuition (Which was only $3800 this semester). On top of that, my boyfriend was moving in with me and planning on getting a job to help support me while I attend school.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances, $2000 of my left-over 'living' student loan money was stolen/loaned, and the person only paid back $1000, claiming that was all they took. This person is a family member - really the only family member I have, and they're currently paying for my hydro and internet until I can afford it - so I can't bring myself to do anything about it, or even fight with them over how much they took. The worst part is what they spent it on, but I don't want to divulge that. On top of that my boyfriend, who is currently 20, left his job of his own accord with the intention of moving with me, so he doesn't qualify for Unemployment Insurance. We've been checking all the websites, gone out on numerous occasions to every store that would take a resume handing them out, and emailed quite a few possible employers, but so far we haven't heard back. His resume shouldn't be the problem, since it was done professionally, but we've still tried editing it now and then to get it to sound even better. Still, he can't seem to get a job, and we've been looking for two months (since he moved here).

The problem with this is I've had to pay all the rent ($600 a month) and I'm out of student loans. We're currently $5.00 in the red, and the only reason we have food is because my college has special bursaries set aside for people in financial crisis, so they've given me Superstore gift cards so we can buy food. Unfortunately this doesn't help with my biggest problem right now, and that's December rent.

So, my biggest question right now is... What can we do? I've been so stressed about this that I haven't been able to concentrate on my work (art school, it's kind of hard for me to paint when I'm this stressed) and I'm starting to fail my classes, which would make this entire endeavor a complete failure. What are our options? I'm going to see a school councilor Monday about some options, but I want to know if anyone here knows anything that could help.

Sorry about all this, I didn't know where or who to ask...

Neighbor with Gun... Has shot... [Nov. 8th, 2009|09:08 pm]

poor_skills

[blairpettrey]
I live in Maryland (so if anyone knows specific laws, that'd be rad too!). For clarification person without details we will call Neighbor A & B the married neighbors and neighbor C the sweet neighbor.

A & B Live next door to me (we have townhomes). A&B got into a fight. They have 4 children. A is drunk as hell (like always) and pulls out his gun and points it at his wife. B grabs her kids and runs to Neighbor C's house. She's not in shock. She's calm and collective - but she says she needs help, and so C of course helps. A (in his drunken stage) pounds and threatens to bust in neighbor C's door if they don't let him in. Neighbor C calls the cops because A claims he is going to shoot them with his gun. The 911 dispatcher asks B(The wife) if her husband (A) has a gun - and she says not a handgun, but yes a shotgun.

45 minutes later we hear a gunshot. REALLY FREAKING CLOSE. Then another... by the end there are 4 gunshots. A&B live right next door to us...2 of the shots were IN THERE HOUSE and the other 2 were on our street because A went psycho in his drunken stage and shot neighbor C's car in. The cops came - helicopters came. It was a freaking madhouse.

Regardless - Because no one actually SAW Neighbor A do what he did and now his wife (because we all know how unfortunate domestic situations can be for woman) won't admit that her husband has a gun (because he just got released from prison, can't legally posses a gun - so he could go back to prison for having possession of a gun as well as the damage he created) - the cops can't really do anything (at least at this point...).

Do I have ANY right to tell my leasing office they either need to evict the crazy man or let me out of my lease? I have 2 young children that there room shares the wall with A&B's house. I'm scared. Shots were fired. This is crazy, ridiculus, and obviously not a safe haven... But I can't really afford for a broken lease to be on my credit report (but if it has to be, I will do it - my children's safety is obviously more important). Anyhow, do I have any legal rights?

Anyone know what's going on with all the helicopters and police cars zooming around downtown? I'm in Oxford Center and a police helicopter flew by my window a few minutes back, it zoomed in between Oxford and the Grant Building, which was pretty crazy.

I know the Russell Crowe movie is filming on the Allegheny River bridges today, is this madness for that? Or is it other madness entirely?

I'm looking to buy a Wii since my bf never has money to go anywhere anymore, and I can't always afford to pay for him. So I figured it might be something fun we could do while not having to go anywhere. Watching movies all the time gets boring :P Anyway, a guy in the town I work in is selling one plus the remotes, wires, and 2 games for $190. But I'm so scared of buying it and it being a POS. Any advice for me? He listed it in excellent condition and when I asked why he was selling it is he said he just doesn't use it and wants the money to buy an xbox.

Some days are chili [Nov. 5th, 2009|02:41 pm]

[drgrim]
I could wax poetic about this season. The trees, the nip in the air, and the smell of chocolate from the boys Hallowe'en loot. The chocolate can handle it's own and better writers than I have already cornered the market with their descriptive powers.

This season's chill brings the warmth of chili.

Alright, that's just an excuse, we eat chili regardless of the season. As my oldest would say, "Chili is yum!" I set out to prepare for something, different.
Over the summer we were part of a community gardening plot. This year our big harvest was pickling cucumbers, tomatillos, and peppers. Lots of Pepperocinis, Poblanos, Serrano, and JalapeƱos! That, however, is for a different post. This post is about Tomatillos!

need opinions about work and maternity leave vs getting fired [Nov. 7th, 2009|07:34 pm]

poor_skills

[jane_lindenwood]
I am 20 weeks pregnant with our first kid and we are very excited!

I have a job that pays some bills and gives me health insurance, but quite honestly if I wasn't pregnant, I would have quit at least two months ago. Basically, regardless of when I do end up leaving to have the baby I have no plans of returning. Maybe to a different department in the same company, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

I am a high risk mama and I literally have twice as many appointments (at least) as the average pregnant lady. I am overweight and have high blood pressure. I'm being monitored by two doctors and everything has been okay so far with the baby and his/her growth and my blood pressure has been well controlled by medication.

I have been having a rough time with morning sickness and getting knocked down by a stomach bug for a couple of weeks and have missed a fair amount of work. My bosses are not pleased with this and think I need to toughen up. That may be the case, and I may look back and think I was being a giant wuss, but right now in the moment I'm just doing the best that I can. I have not worked here long enough to qualify for FMLA but I can take a medical leave of absence or personal leave. With that, I would technically be an employee for up to 38 weeks and would have no changes to health insurance for the first 12 weeks. After that, the health insurance would go away unless I paid into COBRA.

If I'm counting right, I'm one missed day of work away from being fired. As far as I know, I would qualify for unemployment because I have a health condition that would have led me to being fired. We would definitely qualify for food stamps then and although I'm not sure about Medicaid, I would qualify for CHIPS insurance for the rest of my pregnancy so at least prenatal care and delivery would be covered and the baby would be after that.

My question is, do you think it would be better to get fired or to go on medical leave now? I'm due in March, so my insurance would not last until the birth of my baby, but it would get me through the next few months at least. Is having health insurance through my company more important than trying to collect unemployment?

Any thoughts are helpful! Thanks for your time, I totally love this community.

This afternoon after I bought a few items at the Giant Eagle on Murray Ave. in Squirrel Hill, I left the bag on my car seat and then walked down the street to Barnes & Noble. When I came back, there was a store-generated note on my windshield with my license number filled in, reminding me that parking there is allowed only while you're actually shopping, not while you're then running errands nearby, and drivers not actively shopping are subject to getting their buggies towed away. I'm guessing they're keeping track of cars that park there repeatedly. I think I might have been noticed exiting the parking lot on foot by a guy rounding up grocery carts. Over the past couple of years, I've parked there many times without actually shopping, but this is the first time anything has been said about it. Just thought I'd let you know. Have you ever been towed from there?

saw The Men Who Stare At Goats last night. it was amusing and decent, but would have been much better with a stronger ending. also, they make quite a few references to Star Wars, which made it seem like they cast Ewan McGregor for the soul purpose of making Star Wars jokes. Not that I'm complaining.

had a dream that 2 or 3 of my back molars fell out. not just my molars, but they were connected to large chunks of my jaw bone, which also fell out.

the internet says that this symbolizes everything from a fear of death to abandonment to wanting to speak up to being worried about money. so in summary, the internet fails and teeth dreams suck.

Writing a letter of appeal to insurance company. [Nov. 6th, 2009|12:17 pm]

poor_skills

[chellealistic]
I'm not 100% sure if I should ask this question here, but I'm going to anyway and if it isn't something that is relevant, it can be ignored or deleted.

A year and a half ago, my aunt had gastric bypass surgery in order to lose a large amount of weight. Her medicare gap insurance fully paid for the procedure because it was deemed medically necessary since she had been trying to lose the weight for many years with minimal success due to other medical problems she has had for awhile.

A year after the surgery and nearly 200 lbs lighter, she was approved again to have both of her knees replaced so that she could walk without the aid of a cane or wheelchair for the first time in a very long time. Now that she's lost all the weight, her skin doesn't have enough elastic left in it to shrink up, so she's carrying a lot of extra weight in skin and it's pulling on her knees, back, hips and other areas still making it difficult for her to walk without the aid of a cane.

All of her doctors agree and have written letters saying that the skin removal surgery is a necessity and it would greatly improve her quality of life. The insurance company refuses to believe it is anything but vanity, since it's a cosmetic procedure, and has refused to pay for any part of it. My aunt wants to appeal the decision and I'm trying to help her write a letter of appeal.

My question is...how do we go about doing this properly? I've done research and so has she, but none of it seems to actually be pointing how to actually phrase the letter and how to make it the most compelling it can be. Even with so many doctors to back her up, she still wants her side of the appeal to be compelling.

Has anyone had experience with this type of thing? I would appreciate any guidance in the matter. She has 30 days left to appeal and really no idea where to begin. All the websites I've found that say they do a guide to writing a letter seem to be too generic. Is too much detail a bad thing? I really have no clue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

cat food. [Nov. 6th, 2009|12:27 pm]

our cat is adopted.

when we got him, he had tummy issues. probably due to eating garbage, which we still catch him doing.

we started him on a canadian brand of cat food called ORIJIN. it seemed like a good food. and it only costs $20 for a big bag.

then we took him to the vet, who told us to buy the vet food instead. medi cal hypoallergenic gastro-stuff. it is $44 for the same bag. i think the vet food is good. although, i do still notice that he has diarrhea sometimes.

is there a cat food we can buy that is similar (aka hypo and gastro and good for him!) but less expensive???

Five months ago I started the dental braces process. I am paying $5700 out of pocket for braces, since my insurance does not cover them. I paid $570 down (I think, or an amount close to that) and now pay $160 a month till its paid off. I started about 8 months ago. A co-worker mentioned since its a medical expense, I might get extra money back for taxes? Anyone know anything about this? I usually just do my taxes on TurboTax. This is costing me a fortune and if I could get extra money back on my refund, that would be amazing. I live in NY if that counts for anything.

I'm not entirely convinced Yvonne didn't make that red thing herself one long, sleepless night while TNT ran the movie Maverick over and over again. And Madeline's seems like it belongs in one of those old-timey photo setups where you show up, they put old clothes over your real ones, and tell you not to smile while they take your photo -- all so you can get a sepia-toned picture of yourself in a cardboard frame looking like your own crabby ancestor.

In fact:

MTV European Music Awards Fug: Katy Perry's Other Outfits [Nov. 6th, 2009|08:15 pm]
go_fug_yourself
Katy Perry had a busy night in Germany: As the host of the MTV EMAs, she did what every awards-show emcee does, and wore seventy billion different outfits. I got tired just sifting through the photos, and I didn't have to change my pants every five minutes to do it -- although maybe next time I will, just to increase my empathy. That way, when, say, Eva Longoria Parker hosts the ALMAs again and dons 15 separate ensembles, and I fug them, and she calls me up (you know, as she's wont to do) and goes, "Bitch, you don't know my life," I can be like, "Oh yes I DO -- do you KNOW how many t-shirts I went through last night while I was surfing for photos?" And then we'll cry and hug it out and she'll give me a pair of Louboutins from her closet as a peace offering.

Anyway: Perry. Let's start with what she wore on the red carpet.

I don't mind this too much. From some angles, the black detail looks like a creeping skin disease, and I guess it is indenting on her left boob a little bit, and I am tired of fishtails... in fact, given all of that, why DOESN'T it bother me? I don't know. I actually think she looks pretty. And TINY. It's not that I ever thought Katy Perry wasn't super slender, but for whatever reason this drove it home.

Later, there was this:

92809913.jpg

It's fine. It fits her boobs better. It's fairly plain, but for the adornment on her chest that reminds me of what might happen if you ran over an Everlasting Gobstopper with your car.

Once Katy got on stage, though, things took their usual turn:

92809904.jpg

I mean, THIS is why they keep asking Katy Perry to host the EMAs. It's not because she's the greatest talent of our age; it's because she'll wear satin panties that have a glittering heart over her bajingo. And unlike Lady Gaga, her costumes don't ask us to think.

Well, this one might a little:

92807780.jpg

But only because I seriously can't tell if I am staring at her underboob right now, or if it's an optical illusion. I THINK it's underboob. It's so much underboob. Like, to the point where there's not even any overboob. Or regular boob. it's JUST UNDERBOOB. It's a MENACE. Also, honey, when it comes to swings and trains, you have to be careful -- unless you can go full Sarah Brightman, there is no point, and you, milady, are no Sarah Brightman.

I guess this outfit made me think for a brief period, also:

92807689.jpg

Only for two seconds, though. Because after that time it becomes immediately apparent that what looked like a jaunty Robin Hood feather in her hair is actually a giant pair of lips, and that she's not wearing a garter belt but in fact stockings painted to LOOK like a garter belt. Once we've come to grips with all this, our brains quickly move on to more pressing issues, like why our fridge is empty of beer, and when Robin Antin will hire Katy to be the ringmaster of a Pussycat Dolls-themed circus, and how long the line of applicants for "knife-thrower" might be.

Still, what keeps the EMAs bringing Katy Perry to the party is this kind of commitment to quality:

92806382(2).jpg

You want a pearl-nippled host who will make DAMN sure that her blue, horned spankies do not ride down and expose her belly-button. I mean, we do live in a SOCIETY, people. There are very clear rules.

Leigh Lezfugk [Nov. 6th, 2009|07:45 pm]

This photo was a contender for Freaky Fug Friday, until Katy Perry swooped in with her Swiss Cheese ball gown and stole Leigh Lezark's thunder.

It's just as well. Because obviously, based on her dress, Leigh Lezark has just returned from an incredibly depressing and cheap Hawaiian vacation, and she needs some time to heal.

A Fuggle Man [Nov. 6th, 2009|07:11 pm]

Is Ginnifer Goodwin being punished?

92859149.jpg

I feel like this is what you'd get if you tried going out in a skimpy outfit, and your mother said, "HOLD ON THERE, honey, you are not leaving my house dressed like THAT," and you were like, "MOM, don't be so LAME, this is TOTALLY not even that short," and she was all, "But I can see your NIPPLE poking through there," and you were like, "Dude, Mom, nips are the new black, everyone is doing it," and she was like, "I WOULD SOONER GLUE THE GUEST-ROOM CURTAINS TO YOUR BODY THAN LET YOU WEAR THAT DRESS," and you go, "I'd like to see you TRY, old woman," and she said, "OH NO YOU DI'INT," and grabbed her glue gun and a stapler and went to town, and you wore it out anyway just to prove that she couldn't defeat you. So I guess what I'm saying is, maybe Ginnifer would've been better off picking the lengthy grounding that awaited her behind Door No. 2.

MTV European Music Awards Fug: Beyonce AND Leona Lewis [Nov. 6th, 2009|06:53 pm]

I always speak too soon. I put up photos of people on the red carpet -- like Beyonce yesterday, and Leona today -- and then I see that they changed their clothes for the performance portion of the evening. It happens ALL THE TIME and yet I always forget. I am like Jessica Simpson with boys who are guaranteed to break her heart: I NEVER LEARN.

First up: Beyonce's stage attire.

92809793.jpg

You know, it's... well, it's Beyonce in lingerie. It's not the weirdest thing she's ever worn, nor is it particularly inspired. I guess I just wish she weren't being quite so Christina Aguilera about it all. We've been there. We've seen that. It was dirrrrty. Move along.

Leona Lewis went much bigger for her performance:

I didn't know the Wicked Witch of the West had come out with an album inspired by that accursed tornado that dropped a house on her sister, and brought the instrument of her temporary destruction to Oz. What a great way to raise funds to get that monkey army started again.

Fugruza Balk [Nov. 6th, 2009|06:12 pm]

When I was younger, The Worst Witch was one of my favorite book series, and I LOVED the TV version they did with Charlotte Rae and Diana Rigg and -- the best -- Tim Curry. And Fairuza Balk, just a kid at the time, played the hapless sorceress in question, Mildred Hubble. She was adorable, and I've always had a soft spot for her because of that part.

So I enjoyed seeing her turn up at the Bad Lieutenant premiere. I guess she's in the movie. Hooray for being a working actress.

And when I saw this, I thought, "Oh, it's typical Fairuza biker-chick fashion. I'm sure the bottom is just a pair of leather pants, or something."

It is not.

Bad_Lieutenant_08_wenn2642290.jpg

In fact, this looks like another Mildred Hubble accident -- as if our tragic heroine was trying to make an appropriately grim duvet cover for her bed on Halloween, and with one incorrect flick of the wand, the thing cleaved itself to her legs and wouldn't let go. One might go so far as to call it... wait for it... The Worst Stitch. ZING.

MTV European Music Awards Fug Carpet: Leona Lewis [Nov. 6th, 2009|05:45 pm]

When I first saw this photo, I thought, "I guess that's sort of an interesting cocktail dress Leona is wearing."

92799873.jpg

And then. AND THEN:

92798471.jpg

That's right: Leona's skirt turned into DAVID HASSELHOFF.

No, it didn't. But it could have. And it would have been amazing. Instead, it turned out to be this:

92798551.jpg

It's a sequined genie-pants jumpsuit. Sequined. Genie pants. Jumpsuit. And even if you take one element of that away -- say, make it sequined genie pants, or a sequined jumpsuit, or a genie-pants jumpsuit -- it STILL would make my soul weep. In fact, I think the only math that might make this palatable to me would be: Sequined Genie Pants Jumpsuit - Jumpsuit - Genie Pants + skirt - shoes + better shoes x dirty martini + David Boreanaz. They really ought to teach that kind of math in school. WAY more people would become accountants.

Fug or Fab: Eva Mendes [Nov. 6th, 2009|05:10 pm]

It's not that I hate things that are sparkly.

It's that I think Eva Mendes may have arrived at this event via confetti cannon.
